Originally designed for the U.S. Army’s Springfield trapdoor rifle and then lever actions, the .45-70 was a serious upgrade from the smaller calibers that had come before it. It was so powerful, it could stop a charging buffalo in its tracks- or roll a runaway outlaw off his horse faster than a tumbleweed in a dust storm. If you were carrying the .45-70, it wasn’t just about the shot; it was about sending a message: “I’m here, and I don’t need to explain myself.” Cowboys and hunters quickly adopted the .45-70 for their own, especially when it came to hunting bison.
